Post 1: The Budget Debate and Political Theater

Both the Democrats and the Republicans know that this debate is farce, but they must cut something to satisfy the current public fervor, and this is the least politically risky option. On the right, true small government ideologues want more, but they are willing to accept any cuts they can get. Quite openly, they are more concerned with intellectual principles than with the fate of people suddenly cut off from programs on which they depend. More moderate or opportunistic Republicans and the bulk of Democrats are just hoping that true believers in small government will be sated by the current round of “sacrifices,” so that Congress can continue to avoid the truly difficult budget problems.
